Ġgantija, or "Tower of the Giants", is an important prehistoric temple that ranks among the oldest structures in the world.
The construction of the temple dates back to around 3,500 BC. The sanctuary is made up of huge, unmissable boulders, yet it was discovered relatively recently - stumbled upon 200 years ago by a farmer working the fields in the area.
Historical artefacts have also been found in the temple and can be viewed at the Victoria Archaeological Museum.
Why the temple was built and what its significance was, archaeologists still do not know. However, there are tales of a female giantess, Sunsuna, who brought massive boulders from the Ta'Cenc quarry on the south coast of the island here on her head.
Entrance fees and opening hours
The site is small and you can walk through the entire area in about 20 minutes. Official website: heritagemalta.mt/ggantija.
Open daily from 10:00 am to 6:00 pm.
The ticket price includes admission to the nearby Ta' Kola Windmill, which dates back to the 18th century. On the ground floor you can see the workshop with a large variety of tools, while on the 1st floor the living quarters of the miller's family have been restored.
Admission is as follows:
- Adults: 10 eur
- Minors 12-17 years and seniors over 60 years: 8 eur
- Children under 11 years: 6 eur
How to get in.
Ggantija Located near the centre of Xaghra, it can be reached within a few minutes drive from Victoria.
While there is no parking at the entrance, you can park for free on all streets of Xaghra.
There is a 307 bus service to the town from Vicotria every hour.
From Mgarr Harbour and Ramla Bay, the 322 bus stops once every hour and a half. The stop is less than 30 metres from the main entrance.
